Who We Are

Our Story

The Haere Mai Bags project started as a class project back in 2019. When learning about migration and refugees in their year 9 social studies class, students decided to do something for the former refugees arriving at Nayland College. They pooled money together and made the first version of the haere mai bags. The premise is simple: school bags filled with everything a former refugee student new to the country needs to start school. This simple act of kindness not only eleviates a financial burden, but it also welcomes these students, helping ensure a smoother transition to New Zealand. As a student-powered project, a haere mai bag shows the recipients that they are supported and looked out for in this unfamiliar, new environment. Seeing how well this was received, Pippa and Ysabella decided they didn't want it to be a one off. After putting in years of work to make this a sustainable, streamlined process, they are proud to have a dedicated team of students of all year levels behind them and funding from incredibly generous community members as well as the Kamahi trust. The project is now looking to expand beyond Nayland College and reach as many schools in New Zealand as possible. We believe this project has the power to make a real difference, setting up young people for success regardless of the challenges they have faced.

About Us

Ysabella Abel & Pippa Sussex

Hey, my name is Ysabella I'm one of the founders of Haere Mai bags. This project is all about giving to others and that’s what I love the most about it. It’s so amazing to know that I can make a positive difference in other people's lives. It’s also a great opportunity to provide a way for others to give back to their community, whether that be the students that help us create these welcome packs or those who donate to make it all possible.

Hi! I'm Pippa, the other founder of the project! I love the real difference this simple idea has made in people's lives. We have the ability as students to unite and welcome these former refugees as they join our Kura. It takes a financial burden off them, but it also acts as a warm welcome to show how valued they are at our school. I have absolutely loved seeing this project blossom from a place of genuine care and helping it grow into what it is now.
